Volunteer: Litter Index

Join us in saving our environment one step at a time!

In collaboration with Keep America Beautiful, we have a volunteer opportunity for anyone who loves our planet and wants to help change it for the better. We are hosting a Harrisburg Litter Index! You will drive around a designated area in Harrisburg and take note of the amount of litter you see in different areas. Scales and maps will be provided beforehand, and there will be a navigator from TCCA showing you where to go. Volunteers will be broken up into teams based on the different areas, then led to each place in their own cars. We will be offering reimbursement for any gas mileage used during volunteering. This opportunity will be happening on Saturday, December 1st, from 9 AM - 12:30 PM, and a bagged lunch will be provided. We need 12 volunteers to make this day a success!

There is also a MANDATORY virtual meeting on December 4th from 4 - 5 PM to talk more about the expectations for the opportunity. If you want to be involved but can't make the meeting, please email adatesman@cactricounty.org.

Volunteer: Surveying for Heart of the Hill

Surveying for Heart of the Hill

Looking to connect with your neighbors and give back to your community? As part of the Heart of the Hill project, Tri County Community Action is working to increase the safety of the people who reside in South Alison Hill. On Thursday, October 16th, 23rd, and 30th we will be going door to door surveying those whom we gave lightbulbs to last month. These surveys will be asking people if they noticed a difference in crime and light in the area so we can plan the next steps of the project. We will need 2 - 4 volunteers who are 18+ for each shift to help us out! There will be maps provided, and comfortable shoes will be necessary because there will be walking involved. This opportunity will be weather permitting, so keep an eye on your email. Hope to see you there!

Volunteer: Poverty Simulation Volunteers

A Poverty Simulation is a true-to-life role playing experience for groups and organizations to experience first-hand the challenges, decisions, and life of someone in poverty. We are looking for volunteers who can help act out various institutions that groups and organizations will interact with during the simulation. Simulations will last approximately three hours.

Groups will be faced with daily decisions ranging from how to get the kids to school on time, find or maintain employment, visit the assistance office or church, pay your bills, and keep a roof over your head...all in the span of a few hours. Each 15 minute period of time accounts for exactly one week, and within that week and the three that follow, groups will learn what poverty really looks like and how it can impact every daily decision to be made.

Poverty Simulations are thought provoking and lead to powerful conversations, and they help us all realize that it takes a community to end poverty.

Volunteers are needed to help with the following parts of the poverty simulation:

Portraying one of our services. Our simulations portray people interacting with housing agencies, financial institutions, schools, community health centers, and infrastructure providers. Our volunteer actors will be briefed on their role prior to the event with instructions on how to effectively act out their part.

*Please include your availability (days of the week, morning/afternoon, etc.) in the notes section of your signup.

*Once you signup for this opportunity you will be sent a link with the days and times of poverty simulations currently scheduled and given more information. The list will be continually updated, and you will receive a notification when new simulations are scheduled.

*Poverty simulations will take place throughout our tri-county region of Cumberland, Dauphin, and Perry Counties.
